Former Governor Ed Rendell will be Yangming’s June Tasty Talk speaker.

Born in New York City, this Jewish son of Russian immigrants earned a Villanova law degree that launched a distinguished career, from 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Reserve, to Philadelphia District Attorney and Mayor, to Governor of Pennsylvania, Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, acclaimed author, and on-air political AND football analyst.

In 1978, Ed Rendell became the youngest District Attorney of a major American city. As Mayor (1992 – 2000), despite inheriting a $250 million deficit, Ed balanced Philadelphia’s budget while cutting business and wage taxes and improving city services. Al Gore called him “America’s Mayor” and The New York Times proclaimed that under Rendell, “Philadelphia has made one of the most stunning turnarounds in urban history.”

In 2003, Ed Rendell was elected Governor. His first piece of legislation proposed using slot machine revenue to reduce taxes by $1.5 billion and boost education funding by $687 million. Soon thereafter, he served as Chairman of the National Governors Association, and in 2006 was re-elected Governor in a landslide.

After leaving public office, Rendell returned to his former law firm, Ballard Spahr, and in January of 2011 became an on-air political analyst for NBC. The following year, his book “A Nation of Wusses: How America’s Leaders Lost the Guts to Make Us Great” took the nation by storm. That same passion has made him a beloved analyst for Comcast SportsNet’s Eagles Postgame Live, and will surely make his Tasty Talk on Wednesday, June 27 an event to remember.

Hors d’oeuvres begin at 12:30, followed by the former Governor’s Tasty Talk, Q&A, and a wonderful family-style lunch. Just $20 ($25 at the door, if seats available) covers lunch, dessert, tax and tip. All profits benefit The Rendell Center for Civics and Civic Engagement, which is inspiring K-8th grade students with its educational mock trials, annual Citizenship Challenge and professional development opportunities for teachers.
